The Sorcerer Family is the occult electric-ukulele project of San Diego, California musician Sam Lopez. Isolated and minimal, forlorn and dissonant. This is a dark and indigenous folk music for the recently haunted.
Having spent the past 11 years performing as noise-music monstrosity Zsa Zsa Gabor, Lopez felt that project had run its course and ended it last year.
Where Zsa Zsa Gabor was electronic, static and excessive, Lopez desired his next project to be organic and earthly. The Sorcerer Family was born from that desire. Taking inspiration from broken Folkways Records, the ruins of ancient temples and obscure magic practices, Lopez created a new language for the ukulele (an instrument usually associated with happiness and warmth), utilizing unique string tunings and unusual techniques, the sounds now evoke loss, mourning and vulnerability.
Think world music meets the book of the dead.
